August: Planning for Fall Planting
One of the advantages of living in Northern Virginia is our long growing season. As the weather begins to cool, there is still time to plant many cool weather food crops like lettuce, kale and radishes. In addition, the best time to plant cool weather lawn grasses is in the early autumn as they grow best in the cooler weather and frequent rain of that season. As Fall progresses, we should be planting woody plants so that trees and shrubs have time to settle in and develop root systems before the stress of hotter weather.
